The teacher of course has an easy out here: he says the onus is on the child to correct their own work and then ask for help if they need it. I mean, what exactly are you learning, if you do the work, but the work is wrong, stays that way, and you never realize you made a mistake to begin with? As a result, when I asked my daughter to get out her homework to help her study for a recent exam, I found a bunch of homework problems which were flat out wrong, and were never corrected. Instead, he hands out an answer key which it turns out a lot of students blow off. But he never grades the work for accuracy, correctness. If you do it, you get 4 easy pts, if it is late, 1 pt off etc. He was pretty annoyed at being asked down, and was even more annoyed when I asked him why he didn't grade homework in his class. The math teacher (8th grade Algebra II) decided to skip the meeting because he had class, but I insisted in bringing him down to discuss something I thought was worth discussing.
